RELEASE: GStreamer Good Plug-ins 0.10.15 'I've been up all night'

Jan Schmidt-6
This mail announces the release of GStreamer Good Plug-ins 0.10.15 'I've been up all night'.

GStreamer Good Plug-ins is a set of plug-ins that we consider to have good
quality code and correct functionality, under our preferred license (LGPL for
the plug-in code, LGPL or LGPL-compatible for the supporting library).

For more information, see http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/modules/gst-plugins-good.html

Release notes for GStreamer Good Plug-ins 0.10.15 "I've been up all night"

The GStreamer team is proud to announce a new release
in the 0.10.x stable series of the
GStreamer Good Plug-ins.

The 0.10.x series is a stable series targeted at end users.
It is not API or ABI compatible with the stable 0.8.x series.
It is, however, parallel installable with the 0.8.x series.

"Such ingratitude.  After all the times I've saved your life."

A collection of plug-ins you'd want to have right next to you on the
battlefield.  Shooting sharp and making no mistakes, these plug-ins have it
all: good looks, good code, and good licensing.  Documented and dressed up
in tests.  If you're looking for a role model to base your own plug-in on,
here it is.

If you find a plot hole or a badly lip-synced line of code in them,
let us know - it is a matter of honour for us to ensure Blondie doesn't look
like he's been walking 100 miles through the desert without water.

This module contains a set of plug-ins that we consider to have good quality
code, correct functionality, our preferred license (LGPL for the plug-in
code, LGPL or LGPL-compatible for the supporting library).
We believe distributors can safely ship these plug-ins.
People writing elements should base their code on these elements.

Other modules containing plug-ins are:

gst-plugins-base
contains a basic set of well-supported plug-ins
gst-plugins-ugly
contains a set of well-supported plug-ins, but might pose problems for
    distributors
gst-plugins-bad
contains a set of less supported plug-ins that haven't passed the
    rigorous quality testing we expect

Aren't you tackling the wrong end of the problem ? If the release
notes contained the output of git shortlog (regardless of the moves) I'd
never read them.

The point of a release note is not to be a behemoth mail with all the
details of what happened... That's what the ChangeLog is for (which is
automatically generated). It's an extra burden for the release
maintainer, but having a human-parsed summary of the changes ("Features
of this release") is much better than a machine-generated output.

Would you like the kernel release notes to have the output of git
short-log in it ?

Yes, I noticed that the contributor list had some extra entries in it as
artefacts of the plugin moves, but couldn't be bothered to filter and
remove them.

I don't like it, to be honest. If people want that level of detail, it's
already in the ChangeLog.

The changelog doesn't show that Andy Wingo did 10 commits for 0.10.15, does it?

Have you tried the -s option?
git shortlog -s RELEASE-0_10_14..RELEASE-0.10.15

While we are at it, why the inconsistent
RELEASE-MAJOR_MINOR_MICRO/RELEASE-MAJOR.MINOR.MICRO? Old inconsistent
tags can be dropped in favor of consistent ones which in turn could be
more common ones: vMAJOR.MINOR.MICRO.

Sure, but we care more about authors than commiters, so that's not
really an issue.

  We'll consider that around 0.11.

Those are all interesting ideas, but we prefer doing it the current
way. Thanks for your suggestions.

The ChangeLog has too many details, if I want so much details I use gitk.

I'm not proposing a modified shortlog, I'm proposing the exact output
of shortlog. If the commits were properly done, then the output of
shortlog would look nice. You would need to get rid of 'automatic
update of common' and instead of "[MOVED FROM BAD 56/56]" make a merge
commit.

Yes I would, and they do have the shortlog in them:

You *already* changed the format:
RELEASE-0_10_14
RELEASE-0.10.15

What is so different to v0.10.16 that it needs to wait to 0.11?

I think Edward hit the nail on the head, people are fine with current
release procedure. Please put your thoughts in bugzilla for changes to
release process where they can be appreciated and fine tuned over a
long period of time.

No, not all people are fine with the current release procedure. But it's really
just small (but annoying) details that are easy to fix.

The CVS way for tags was that "you can't have . characters in them", so the
outcome was the ugly RELEASE_0_10_14. Now git not only let's you use dots
(which is obviously good for consistency), but there's also a sane guideline
for versioned release tags: v0.10.14. This is what git.git and kernel does.
Some git tools treat these tags a bit differently. It looks nice. It's what
people new to GStreamer expect the tags to be (since it's in git!). Why argue
about this?

Hey, we have tools that recognise the tags we use too. Big whoop.

Indeed.

If that was true they would have been broken with RELEASE-0.10.15.

While Rene provided reasonable arguments, all you could do in reply
was to utter a sarcastic sentence? Nothing I expected from a smart guy
like you, Jan.

   Nice, even more sarcasm.

Dude! That is way too much information that user is NOT interested
in knowing and release notes are for users. Git is not the solution
for all problems on this planet you know. :)

That is just ugly, no need to generate release notes from git to realize that.

I imagine that was an honest mistake and Jan can improve on that
without acting on your advise.

Yes, it's too much information because the history is disorganized.

If you do a shortlog on git.git of v1.6.2..v1.6.3 you'll see much
better results. Not to mention v1.6.3..v1.6.3.1

Also, the command can be tuned to ignore merges, so that you see
"Merge branch move-from-bad-foo" as a single commit.

Personally I'm interested on how many commits each contributor did,
for which 'git shortlog -s' works pretty well already (given that you
have a clean repo).

Yeah, a merge commit would do nicely as I explained above.

I don't mind being listed as a contributor of the release :)

All I'm saying is; there are better ways to maintain releases, and git
already provides you with very useful tools, it might not be such a
bad idea to use them.

Cheers.
